to fully vaccinated people. The Club made this decision for the following
reasons: <o:p></o:p><ul type="disc">
 <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: rgb(12, 20, 39); line-height: normal; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">The
 Club has a duty to ensure the health and safety of staff, Members and
 customers under the&nbsp;Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (NSW), and
 under general law.<o:p></o:p></li>
 <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: rgb(12, 20, 39); line-height: normal; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">Those
 who are not fully vaccinated have a higher risk of transmitting the
 coronavirus to workers and patrons. For instance, the Doherty Modelling
 Report, prepared for the National Cabinet, states that people fully
 vaccinated with the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines have an overall
 reduction in transmission of 79% and 93%, respectively.<o:p></o:p></li>
 <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: rgb(12, 20, 39); line-height: normal; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">Moreover,
 subclause 1.3(f) of the&nbsp;Public Health (COVID-19 General) Order
 2021&nbsp;states “the risk [to public health in NSW] is from and among
 people who remain unvaccinated because these people are more likely to be
 infected, more at risk of severe illness and death resulting from
 infection with SARS-CoV-2, and more likely to transmit the infection to
 others, than fully vaccinated people”.<o:p></o:p></li>
 <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: rgb(12, 20, 39); line-height: normal; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">Given
 the overwhelming research supporting these findings, precluding patrons
 who are not fully vaccinated will reduce the likelihood that fully
 vaccinated staff and patrons will be exposed to the coronavirus, or
 contract COVID-19.<o:p></o:p></li>
 <li class="MsoNormal" style="color: rgb(12, 20, 39); line-height: normal; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;">While
 the Club is implementing other controls to mitigate the risk of COVID-19
 transmission, as outlined in its COVID-19 safety plan, the level of
 mitigation from excluding those who are not fully vaccinated cannot be
 achieved through other available controls</li></ul> The above policy will be reviewed in February 2022.

The average temperature
during October was 230 with a few warmer days above 300.&nbsp; There was 86mm of rainfall, most of which
fell prior to, or on the 14th of October. Since then, we have
received just 4.2mm of rain which somewhat explains why the course is drying
out. Given golfing numbers are extremely high and the weather
is warming up I’m happy with the way the greens have performed throughout
October. We have started to see some dry patches develop later in the month due
to low rainfall, warmer temperatures and running a tough maintenance regime for
the Championships. Despite this the greens are clean of pest and disease and
running well. Our scheduled greens renovations have been moved from the 31st
of October to the 21st of November to accommodate Championships,
they will certainly benefit from the renovations. The tees have been a bit slow to get going but now that
we are seeing higher over-night temperatures, we will see better growth. I’m
impressed though by the way they are handling the amount of traffic going over
them and again ask Members and visitors to PLEASE REPAIR DIVOTS. We may
make some progress if players fill their divot and one other left by less
considerate golfers. Organic fertilizer was applied late in October to help the
tees through the spring. I intend to give them another verti-drain once
Championships are completed. Fairways are looking healthy, regular fertilizer and PGR
applications have helped them obtain a satisfactory cover. The 11th
fairway is taking up a lot of time and effort, but we are seeing a marked
improvement. Further root pruning will take place throughout the warmer months. Turf will also be placed in some of the larger Ground Pearl
patches, particularly on 11th, 13th and 14th. Several bunker “faces” and “lips” require shaping and

The average maximum temperature during September was 210C
and the course received 32mm of rain. A few windy days meant we had debris to
clean up but overall, the weather during the month was favourable. As a course
manager I love this time of year. The greens are in great condition and
have thoroughly enjoyed the mild weather and reduced player numbers. Seed head
control has been carried out as per usual and the last remnants of seed should
be gone by the beginning of Club Championships. With the delayed start to the championships,
we will be rescheduling the October/November renovations to the 21st
&amp; 22nd of November. We will carry out a small solid tine in
early October to help the greens during the busy Championship period. Tees are
waking from their winter nap and recovering well from the early renovation they
received in August. Applications of calcium and organics are being well
received and will play a pivotal role in their condition in the late spring, early
summer period. Apart from one or two tees I’m very happy with the coverage on the
tee surfaces. The tees are responding well to the Poa/Kikuyu control program
and are mostly clear from these weeds. After renovations and amendments in August we dropped the
height of the mower cut on fairways to 10mm. This has now been raised slightly.
Fairways have benefited from this process, as well as regular rainfall, and
are currently in great shape leading into the Championship period. A first
application of insect preventative and control was carried out in late August
and will be followed up regularly over the coming months. Turf will be laid
over bare Ground Pearl areas in October and throughout the growing season. The
11th fairway is improving slowly and will benefit from some planned
turfing during Spring. Follow up applications of organics and gypsum are also
scheduled for the 11th fairway, as well as further tree and tree
root pruning. The path on the 14th has been laid and work is
slowly progressing on its surrounds. As per the Grant a new garden at the back
of the ladies’ tee will be established and fresh soil and turf around the path
will continue to be laid. The floating wetlands were “sent to sea” in
mid-September. They stand out a bit at present with the bright white netting
which is protection from birds vandalising or nesting in them while the plants
establish. The nets will be removed in March ’22 at which time the effect will

August was a dry month until the last week when 70mm of
rain was delivered to the course in a two-day deluge. The rain could not have
come at a better time with renovations being completed just a few days prior
and the course closed due to COVID restrictions. The days were warm with an
average maximum of 190C and only three light and one heavy frost. The
greens were renovated with 16mm hollow tines to a depth of around 100mm. Forty
tonne of USGA top dressing was applied and rubbed in followed by soil amendment
applications. With the rain and a two week closure the greens recovered very
well and are extremely healthy. Poa seed suppression began as scheduled early
in the month with the second application going out at the end of August and the
3rd and final application is scheduled for the end of September. The tees were cored with 19mm hollow tines while the
course was closed, and I hope to follow up in November. The tees have come
through winter quite well and certainly enjoyed the break during the course
closure. Surfaces are clean of weeds besides the odd stubborn patch of Kikuyu
which should be taken care of with upcoming herbicide applications. Gypsum and
organics will be applied to tees in mid-September. The fairways
were renovated with 19mm hollow tines during the renovation week. Cores were
then rubbed in with a steel drag mat and the loose debris blown into the rough.
Five tonne of Calcium was spread over the fairways. The height of cut has been
dropped to 10mm to chop out any thatch and Poa, this height will be raised to
12mm once the first Primo application takes place in September. There are still
a few small bare patches from Ground pearl, and I hope to have these areas
turfed as soon as I can get a full team back on site. With some good rain
predicted through this summer I believe we can really start to get the fairways
back into great condition. Extra organic and gypsum applications have and will continue
to be carried out on the 11th fairway in the coming weeks. Tree root pruning was carried out on a couple of areas on
11th during August and in renovation week arborists removed some
dead trees on the 1st and 16th and some dead wood was

Floating wetlands, funded by the Golf NSW Foundation, were
delivered on the 3rd of September and the first of three have been
‘launched’. The wetlands are designed to vegetate ponds, waterways, dams and
water bodies requiring either an aesthetic treatment, habitat production or

Update on Covid19 and the impact this has had on the Club and many Carnarvon Members Just prior to the onset of the Covid19 pandemic in 2020, Carnarvon endeavored to make reciprocal agreements with 5 local golf clubs with no positive responses from the clubs that we approached. The NSW Government has placed Health Orders that have affected registered clubs throughout the Greater Sydney Area from 26 June until the latest order on 20 August 2021. The first Order closed all licensed clubs from 6.00pm on 26 June 2021 and this effectively has stopped any worthwhile trade from our club and will continue until the Order is lifted. Amendments to the original Order have been added which has impacted many of our members. Initially the Order allowed all members to travel to Carnarvon to exercise from anywhere in the Greater Sydney area. The Order was amended on 9 July 2021 with an exemption to allow golfers to travel only 10km from their residence to play golf (exercise) and golf was to only be played in pairs. This had the effect of halving the number of Carnarvon members who were allowed, under the order, to play golf. Declared Local Government Areas (LGA) with more stringent restrictions came into force at the same time and Carnarvon was in a declared LGA. There was no compensation offered or given to golf clubs for this restriction by the Government. The Board endeavoured to engage nearby golf clubs to allow some sort of temporary reciprocal membership between golf clubs so that our members and members of the clubs we approached could at least play a game of golf. The next amendment was added on 30 July which allowed travel within your own LGA or to a declared LGA but only if the travel was from a non-declared LGA and within the 10km radius. If you reside in a declared LGA or LGA of concern, travel was only permitted for exercise 5km from your residence to the place of exercise (golf course). Again, there was no compensation offered or given to golf clubs for this restriction by the Government. The Order was amended on 20 August to only permit exercise for one hour in total from the time you leave your home until the time you return to your home. This amendment is in force from Monday 23 August 2021. Temporary reciprocal agreements with two nearby clubs were ready to be finalised when the Order was put in force. The Board decided that it was not possible to remain open for the purpose of exercise as defined in the order and we closed the course from Monday 23 August until the order is withdrawn or amended to allow golf to be played. The club, throughout this period and into the future, must still maintain the golf course, clubhouse and keep up lease payments. While we do get some financial support from the Government, the loss per month is $65,000 which is $30,000 more than the budgeted loss of $35,000. The club has written to the Premier regarding the severity of the restrictions placed on our golf club, but we have not yet had a response. We have also had communication from Golf NSW on how they are seeking legal advice on options for golf clubs regarding the impact on the members of clubs from the orders. We sympathise with those members, and there are many, who are severely affected by the Health Orders and unable to play golf at Carnarvon, but we can’t offer any respite or financial relief to individual members who have been restricted from playing because of the legal requirements of the Registered Clubs Act. We realise that membership fees are due this month and that the course is closed. I do remind you that we can’t put membership on hold or offer any remittance or discount because of the Government Health Order that we have no control over. If you decide to put off paying your fees until the golf course opens again you will be put on the waiting list if you have not paid you fees by the end of September. There are currently 70 prospective members on the waiting list. We, as are other golf clubs, bound by our rules and constitution which does not allow advantages to be given to individual members. We are all in the same situation, as none of us can play golf until the Health Orders are withdrawn. Let us hope that changes are forthcoming so we can get back to normality. July was a slightly drier month with only 22.4mm of rain
on the course. The average temperature was 18o and we only experienced
mild frosts until the 30th of July when we had the heaviest frost
since 2017. The greens are coping with the cool weather quite well
and are behaving as they usually do at this time of year, firm and fast. Mowing
frequency has been reduced to minimise wear and to control the speed of the
greens. A solid tine was carried out on the greens in early July and full
renovations began on Wednesday the 18th of August. Tees are
holding their colour but the Par 3 tees continue to show wear through
unrepaired divots.&nbsp; This is a continual problem
so again I ask Members and Visitors to use the sand provided on the Tees to REPAIR
DIVOTS. Players taking this action will assist us in producing a quality
surface. A few shade issues are occurring on a couple of tees
which is affecting their condition through the colder months. I am intending to
renovate the tees in early spring with a follow up in November. The fairways
have come through winter well for which we can thank Mother Nature. The lack of
frost over winter together with regular fertilizer and wetting agent
applications has helped them to hold their colour well. There are a few areas
that are still a little thin, namely the 11th fairway, but other
small areas as well. These areas are mostly suffering from tree root invasion
or in the case of 13th, shade. Root pruning will continue to be
carried out where possible over coming months in an attempt to alleviate this
problem. Turfing of these areas will also be carried out once spring arrives. Hollow coring of the fairways began August 18th,
along with some wet and wear areas of surrounds. Cores will be rubbed in and residual
debris will be blown into the rough. The coring will aide in water and air
movement in the soil, reduce thatch and promote new growth. Five ton of Calcium
will then be spread over the surface to improve soil structure. To reduce the risk of exposure to COVID I have reduced
the staff working hours, staggered start times and have the team working
individually where possible. The path on the 11th is on hold

The average maximum temperature in July was 18.50.
There were a couple of light frosts and the course received 46mm of rain,
although it seems like much more as the course is unable to dry out with the
current weather conditions. Currently the greens are performing very well any minor
signs of Fusarium have all but vanished. The greens are clean and free from any
disease or noticeable pest activity. Selective control of kikuyu runners has
been fairly successful but mechanical control will need to take place between
now and Spring to remove any new growth. The greens were aerated with solid
tines in June and July. The tees are in good shape and the condition can be
improved if players continue to fill the multitude of divots taken. A
light dose of synthetic fertiliser and a pigment was applied in June to help
maintain uniform colour and encourage growth. To assist with the improvement of
the structure of the soil and an application of gypsum was also given to the tees.Please remember
to fill divots on Tees <div style="text-align: left;">Considering the time of the year the condition of the
fairways is impressive. A non-chemical trial for control of Fusarium in
fairways in showing good results so far with trial areas showing no signs of
disease. The 13th fairway received a small amount of turf on some of
the bare area on the left, but I feel this area will not improve until some
trees are trimmed to let in more light. The sleepers have been removed from the 14th
bunker, 12 tonne of sand was added, and it has been re-shaped and shortened by
10m. Progress with some jobs on the course has been held up
slightly with the interruption brought on by Covid
and with a couple of staff off on Annual leave. Work has begun on the new path from the 11th
green to the 12th tee. On Thursday 22 July, Carnarvon was scheduled to host a
Planting Day in conjunction with the Greater Sydney Landcare Network, where we
were seeking volunteers to assist in the planting of 300 donated trees and
shrubs. Sadly due to COVID-19 Restrictions, this Planting Day has been
cancelled. Greater Sydney Landcare will still donate 300 plants, whereby our Groundstaff
will plant them along the boundary on Nottinghill Road, adjacent to the 11th

May was mild with an
average maximum temperature of 210 and 70.6mm of rainfall. Our year-to-date
rainfall now stands at 632mm and a dry couple of months now would be beneficial. Heading into winter the
greens are in fantastic shape and are firming up as they usually do with the
cooler weather. A small solid tine took place in early June to reduce
compaction and increase air flow and water movement through the soil. A small
amount of winter fusarium is evident in some greens and we will be trialling a
“non-chemical” control method. If successful, this will see a reduction of
pesticide use around the course. Selective herbicide was applied to green
perimeters to control kikuyu and couch grass encroachment with fantastic
results. Tees recovered well from
the Poa/Kikuyu control application in March and are in great condition heading
into June. Pigment and synthetic fertilizer will be applied to keep growth and
colour over winter. We have begun replacing
plastic chain around the tees with steel chain. This chain is in place to
direct foot traffic onto tees in such a way that wear is spread evenly
along paths and tee banks, reducing the possibility of bare patches forming in
those areas. <div style="text-align: start;"> Golfers are expected to
use the gaps in the chain and not step over the chain to access the tee. Apart from a few small
pre-existing ground pearl patches, and a few tree root affected areas, fairways
are in tip top shape. More patching took place in May on the 6th and
9th fairways, the 10th, 13th and 14th
are next on the list. We will be carrying out some root pruning over winter to
help reduce tree root encroachment on some fairway areas. Work on the 3rd
pot bunker was carried out in May and has now completed its transition from a
bunker to a mound. Work will commence in June to repair the faces on bunkers, and
we intend to work through all the bunkers as time and the weather allows. <div style="text-align: start;"> Please rake bunkers after
use Tree work was carried out
on the 11th hole clearing the over-hanging and low branches to open
up the approach to the green. A couple dead trees from behind the 12th
tee were also removed. A new path is scheduled
for construction from the 11th green to the 12th tee
during June, again subject to weather conditions. The path will be closer to
the boundary fence allowing for better lies for golfers sending their tee shots

After receiving 467mm of rain in March, April delivered
just 14mm representing the driest April in nearly 160 years. Interestingly this
was just what we needed to help the course recover properly after all that rain
in March. April was warm with the average maximum of 23o which is
perfect for growing cool season grass. The Greens
have thoroughly enjoyed the warm sunny days and cool nights of April and
recovered well from renovations needing only a small solid tine and another
dust of sand to help relieve some stress after the constant rain in March. With
the sunny weather greens have remained clean and free from pest and disease,
although with the wet start to May we could see some Fusarium activity. A selective
herbicide has been applied to green edges and collars to suppress the
encroachment of Kikuyu. Our Couch
tees copped a bit of a knock from the herbicide application in March for Kikuyu
and Poa control but with the warmer weather they have bounced back and have
come through April well. An application of organic fertilizer took place early
in the month, this was then followed by synthetic fertilizer later in the month
to keep the colour in the Couch. Coming into the cooler months the fairways are in
magnificent shape. The inactivity of Ground pearl combined with great weather
has really helped the condition of the fairways. Further turfing of bare areas
took place in April but mostly on surrounds this time. We will see how the
weather goes during winter, but I suspect that will be it for turf now until
August or September. Our preventative, early control of Fusarium took place on
fairways in mid-April. The irrigation system suffered two major leaks in April.
Both were Main line tapping bands that had corroded over time. These leaks
caused some flooding on the 11th and 12th fairways respectively,
but we were able to get the repairs done quickly without causing any disruption

What a month weather-wise! In March we had 467mm of rain which is nearly half of our
annual average rainfall of 1100mm. &nbsp;Although the course was very wet and closed
for a few days, we still fared better than a lot of other courses. Even with
all the rain we still had average maximum temperatures of 25.5 degrees, which
helped the course recover quite quickly after all the rain. Needless to say,
the dams are full. <img src="https://qcC7iEAM4RaGvCB5T.client.v2.comarkdigital.com/v2-api/files/ifABomuotQq2mHyxc/url/2222.jpg" alt="2222.jpg" style="width: 386.453px; height: 190.864px;">&nbsp;<img src="https://qcC7iEAM4RaGvCB5T.client.v2.comarkdigital.com/v2-api/files/Z8BA2E2qenG5SKf46/url/4444.jpg" alt="4444.jpg" style="width: 386.781px; height: 191.026px;"> The greens handled the wet weather very well. Constant
rain and low light conditions are perfect for algae growth and Pythium disease,
neither of which have infested our greens. Fortunately we were able to carry
out our renovations as planned on the 14th and 15th of
March, right before the heavy rain started. We also managed to mini-core the greens
and apply a dusting of sand, gypsum and organic fertilizer all of which has assisted
the greens ability to handle the weather conditions. A small solid tine will
take place in the first week of April to ensure air movement within the
profile. Coming into autumn the Tees are in magnificent condition.
Selective herbicide was applied while we were closed to control kikuyu and
prevent winter grass germination. A second application is due in early April.
Organic fertilizer will also be applied in April in preparation for winter and
spring. I will take this opportunity to remind golfers again to
please take the time to replace/fill divots with sand, especially during
winter when grass recovery is much slower. The fairways bounced back from the wet very well. Poa has
germinated with the wet weather, covering most of the smaller bare areas from
old Ground Pearl damage. We will be starting a new nonchemical program on
fairways to control the formation of Winter Fusarium and this should help them
to maintain uniformity right through winter. We managed to get some turf
patches down on the 14th prior to the rain setting in and I’m planning
to get a couple more fairways done in April subject to supply. Thirty tonnes of bunker sand was placed into the traps as
well as sand being moved where required and wash-outs repaired. There was

More mild weather continued in February. The average
maximum was only 26.4 degrees with just five days over 30 degrees. On top of
this we received a total of 76.5mm of rainfall causing a busy month with staff
on leave and the grass virtually jumping out of the ground. From a Course
Managers point of view and if anyone is taking orders, I will have another five
years of these summers in a row please!<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>The Greens
breezed through the month without any major problems. The small amount of pest
activity late in the month was the only issue worth noting. The greens will
benefit from the renovations scheduled for the 14th and 15th
of March. The high rainfall and the fact that the November renovation was not completed
has seen a small build-up of “black layer” in some of the lower areas on some
greens. There are a couple of small patches of Oxalis on one or two greens
which have been sprayed and will be monitored for further applications if
required.<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>The Tees are
in great shape heading into autumn and will further respond if players continue
to repair divots. An application of selective herbicide will take place in late
March to continue to control infestations of Kikuyu and a pre-emergent will
also be applied to avoid germination of Poa and other winter weeds. The height
of the cut will also be raised to the winter height in March.<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>This has been the first summer in at least 5 years where
we have needed to cut fairways 3 times a week for the whole season. I’m really
happy to see the amount of recovery of the Kikuyu over and around old Ground Pearl
patches. Turf was laid over areas on the 5th and 1st
fairways and will continue in March. Little Ground Pearl was seen during the turfing
process which is a massive positive and shows that we may just be winning the
fight against them. As for the Poa, we will trial using a pre-emergent on one
fairway and compare with Poa control after germination. We will be comparing allelopathy
effects.<o:p></o:p> 















The Bunkers are still in need of some attention and we request

Carnarvon Golf Club began in 1927 when the game was played on an informal basis before being regularised at the first Annual General Meeting in August, 1928. The first President was Alderman W.R. Atkinson of Lidcombe Council and one of the Vice-Presidents was the Hon. J.T. Lang, Premier of New South Wales.The course which measured 4277 yards with a bogey of 75, was situated on the northern side of Parramatta Road and covered the following area : <ul><li>Western Boundary: Wetherill St. </li><li>Northern Boundary: Derby St.</li><li>Eastern Boundary: Haslam’s Creek and Hill Road.</li><li>Southern Boundary: Adderley St. Day St. then Parramatta Road to Hill Road.</li></ul>The area covered by the course included vacant proposed factory sites, unmade roads, an agistment paddock of the State Abbatoirs and portion of Southian’s dairy. The greens were the natural grasses mowed at the weekends by the members’ own push mowers. The holes were jam tins. The course was named after a large sign, visible from Parramatta Road, advertising factory sites for sale on Carnarvon Hill Estate. This sign is regarded as the first clubhouse as members drove nails into it on which to hang their coats and other paraphernalia. The first real clubhouse, known as “the Shack, was erected in 1929 on the corner of Day and Derby Streets and comprised two rooms, one 10 feet by 10 feet for members and the other 8 feet by 8 feet for associates with a 9 feet by 4 feet verandah. In 1931 the old Auburn Ambulance Station was purchased, towed to the site and added to The Shack. As tenure over the original course was tenuous at best a move was made to what became known as the “old course” in late 1932 with the official opening in 1933.The old course was located to the north of Fariola St. and occupied two paddocks owned by Newington State Hospital and a paddock to the south of Holker St. owned by Lidcombe Council. The lease from Newington State Hospital was for fifteen years under permissive occupancy tenure and covered tees and greens only. The greens were enclosed with post and rail fences as protection from our bovine co-tenants of the hospital dairy herd. The clubhouse was moved to the northern side of the eastern end of Fariola St in 1933 when extensive additions and alterations were effected. Things moved along swimmingly for the next ten years or so until the outbreak of World WarII. Our biggest disaster came on 8 March, 1943 when the clubhouse and the top paddock were taken over by the US Navy necessitating yet another move. It was decided to continue with a nine hole course consisting of the bottom paddock for seven holes with the remaining two holes in the council paddock. This became known as the Silverwater course. To accommodate a Clubhouse the committee resolved on 20 April, 1043 to purchase thecottage in Clyde St. Auburn and the adjacent eleven vacant blocks for 470 pounds Following the convention of the time it was necessary to pay 100 pounds “key money” to obtain vacant possession of the property. With renovations the cottage served as a Clubhouse until the move to the present course. The old cottage went through many years of modification, renovation, partial demolition and rebirth as a motor boat club, Auburn Businessman’s Club and is currently Dooley’s On The Water. The move to the present course was foreshadowed as early as 1943. The new course was an amalgamation of two contiguous areas separated by Walters Rd. which originally ran through from Nottinghill Rd to Joseph St. The area between Leila St. and Walters Rd. was the Lidcombe Sports and Showground and the area between Walters Rd and Amy St was the western grazing paddock of Lidcombe State Hospital for its prize winning herd of Holstein dairy cows. The areas were amalgamated, Walters Rd closed and the area leased to Carnarvon Golf Club in 1947. The course was built between the years 1947 to 1949 to a design by Arthur East. The Clubhouse was built over the same period. Due to the difficulty in obtaining building material in the post-war years the Clubhouse was built from material obtained by demolishing the Fariola St building together with the Liverpool and Lidcombe Soldiers’ Halls. The Clubhouse and new course were opened in December, 1949. Additions and renovations kept the building functional until 1998 when the Club came under increasing pressure to bring the structure up to the required standards. The cost involved was considered uneconomic considering the condition of the underpinnings. The Board voted to build a new Clubhouse and then demolish the old building. This was completed in December, 1999. Our present course presented a horticultural challenge to the earlier Committees and course superintendents as they battled with an area of poor clay based soil, gravel patches and rock outcrops. The Committee tendered for and won the contract to remove manure from the holding paddocks at Flemington Saleyards on the site of the present Flemington Markets. The contract ran from 1957 to 1963 and most fairways were covered to a depth of six to eight inches with mostly sheep manure. This was done half a fairway width at a time to enable play to continue. This combined with automatic fairway and greens watering of more recent years coupled with extensive drainage projects, has produced the lush course we have today. To quote the late C.W.Phillips President, from his address at the A.G.M. of 27th March, 1943 :- “Finally we have a good Club built by ourselves for ourselves and those we are happy to have with us and the old Carnarvon spirit will win through notwithstanding”

 <h3>GOLF CARTS</h3>
 We have 24 fully maintained Golf Carts for your use at $50 per cart for 18 holes. Hand pulled buggies must have wide tyres. Alternatively, these may be hired from the Proshop at $5 each.
 <h3>EQUIPMENT HIRE</h3>
 Club hire is available for both left and right handed players. These can be hired from the Proshop at a cost of $25 per set.
 <h3>DRESS RULES</h3>
 We wish to maintain a dress standard commensurate with the game of golf. For men, tailored shorts and trousers, shirts must have sleeves and collars. White short socks may be worn with a length of at least 75mm above the ankle.
 Items such as football jumpers and shorts, stubbies, brief shorts, athletic shorts and singlets, tracksuits, beach attire, dirty and worn clothes are not appropriate. Any person arriving for golf not properly attired will not be allowed on the course.
 <h3>DRINKS ON THE COURSE</h3>
 A drinks cart is available for hire at a cost of $40 per hour with a minimum of 3 hours. A staff member is included in this charge to drive the cart in accordance with RSA law. All beverages must be purchased from the Club.
 <h3>BOOKINGS</h3>
 Tentative bookings will be held for a period of 10 days only, after which time the date will be released. A non-refundable deposit of $500 is to be paid with each confirmed booking. If the function proceeds, the total deposit will be credited to the customer’s account.
 Menus, beverage arrangements, entertainment, audio-visual requirements, room plans, starting and finishing times must be confirmed in writing 14 days prior to the function.
 Final numbers must be confirmed no later than 7 days prior to the day of the event. These numbers may be increased up to 48 hours prior to the day, but not decreased.

In 2025, we hosted our inaugural Mark Hughes Foundation Beanie for Brain Cancer Charity Golf Day and raised an amazing $15,088 for the Foundation! We are still so thankful to everyone who contributed to the days success. Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children, and adults aged under 40 in Australia, yet alarmingly very little is known about brain cancer, its causes or how its treated. 
 That&rsquo;s why Carnarvon Golf Club has decided to help for the second year! Join us for our upcoming Mark Hughes Foundation Beanie for Brain Cancer Charity Golf Day on Friday 19 June 2026, to help us raise much needed funds to help find a cure to brain cancer. We have set an even bigger goal this year - aiming to raise more than $20K for the MHF. Every team that registers will see a portion of their entry fee, made as a donation. Plus we will raise funds through our auctions and raffle.

Become a Member of Carnarvon Golf Club today
The following outlines the process involved in becoming a Member of Carnarvon Golf Club.
Subscription levels are set annually by the Board each year, commencing 1 September. Subscription rates may be adjusted to reflect a pro rata amount, relative to the remaining months of the financial year.
 
1. Completing the Application Form with Application Fee
<ul>
<li>Please ensure that all sections of your application form have been completed in full. An incomplete form may delay your application.</li>
<li>Application forms are available from the reception area of the Club, or may be filled out via our online membership form.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Completed application forms can be submitted to the office in person or electronically.</li>
<li>Please note, a non-refundable application fee of $350 is required to secure a place on the Carnarvon Golf Club wait list. This excludes those applying for Intermediate 1, Junior or Sub Cadet Categories. The application fee is non-transferrable</li>
<li>Payments can be made by cheque or cash if an application is submitted in person. Applications sent by email, must make payment via credit card.</li>
</ul>

2. Approval
<ul>
<li>Once an application form has been received, the form will be posted onto our Members' Notice Board for a period of not less than 7 days.</li>
<li>The application will be considered at the next Board of Directors Meeting. The Board reserves the right to reject any application without providing a reason for their decision. In the event an application is rejected, the application fee will be refunded.</li>
<li>All applicants will be invited to and must attend an interview with the respective Captains.</li>
</ul>

3. Fees
<ul>
<li>All new members must then pay the annual subscription or pro rata amount relative to the remaining months of the current financial year.</li>
<li>Annual subscriptions may be paid in installments, that being monthly* or half yearly*.</li>
<li>*Please be aware that the Club does not offer monthly or half yearly memberships and members must ensure that the annual subscription is always payable in full, regardless of any installment methods that may be allowed from time to time.</li>
</ul>

4. Payment&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Once approved by the Board of Directors, new members will receive a tax invoice for their membership.</li>
<li>Upon payment of the prescribed fees, you will be issued with; Your Membership Card, Fixtures Book &amp; Rules of Golf Book</li>

Conditions of Entry to Competitions
As of 1 January 2015 all visitors must have played a minimum of 3 of their last 20 games at a Home Club nominated by GOLF Link. &nbsp;Failure to comply will make players ineligible to win all trophies, including ball competition.
Visitors will be welcome to participate in Saturday Competitions* (conditions apply) provided the above criteria has been met regarding trophy allocations.
*Saturday Competitions are Members Invitational Member Invitations will no longer apply to Sunday competitions effective 3 March 2024.

<h4>Weather/Rainfall</h4>
Summer has officially concluded; however, March&rsquo;s conditions closely resembled those of February, with an average maximum temperature of 28&deg;C&mdash;only slightly lower. A total of 85mm of rainfall was recorded, which maintained soil moisture and ensured the dams remain full.
<h4>Greens</h4>
The greens have performed exceptionally well, exhibiting full recovery following the previous month&rsquo;s renovations. With the onset of autumn, vegetative growth has begun to slow, resulting in increased green speeds, which averaged 9&rsquo;7&rdquo; for March. Selective herbicide applications have been recommended along kikuyu perimeters in order to manage encroachment. The greens remain free from any disease or pest activity and are in excellent condition moving into the new season. In light of the recent rainfall, solid tining is scheduled for April to promote oxygenation within the soil profile.
<h4>Tees</h4>
The tees are currently displaying optimal coverage and health as autumn approaches. A decrease in growth and recovery rates is anticipated with the arrival of cooler temperatures. Members are respectfully reminded to maintain the quality of the tees by repairing and filling divots, particularly on the Par 3 tees.
<h4>Fairways</h4>
The fairways are in outstanding condition. It should be noted, however, that Corellas have been observed causing damage to the closely mown turf. Members are encouraged, when possible, to discourage these birds from remaining on the fairways by guiding them towards the rough, thereby helping to preserve turf quality.
<h4>Planned Works</h4>
There are plans to commence sand replacement and repair of selected bunker faces. These tasks are currently postponed pending repairs to the drainage pipe traversing the 4th fairway. It is anticipated that this work will proceed in late April, once vegetative growth slows and staffing levels normalise after the run of short weeks. Initial repairs to the 4th fairway drainage will be temporary until a jet truck can be engaged to conduct a comprehensive clearance of the main line.

Following the January 2026 update, we have received further direct communication from Metropolitan Memorial Parks (MMP). This provides important clarity on the consultation feedback process, and I wanted to share it with you immediately.
&nbsp;
Current Situation as of 20 March 2026
&nbsp;
Yesterday (19 March 2026) MMP CEO Denise Ora advised: &ldquo;MMP has now completed their collation and consolidation of the consultation feedback and have provided this to the Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
She confirmed that their website will be updated with this wording. However, when asked whether this also means the report has been supplied to the Minister, Ms. Ora stated she &ldquo;can&rsquo;t comment that it means it is with the Minister yet&rdquo; and can &ldquo;only comment that we have provided to the department (that is truly all I know). That is the process.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
She also undertook to advise on any additional updates &ldquo;as and when I can.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
No timeline was provided for the public release of the report or for sharing it with key stakeholders (including Carnarvon Golf Club), despite the earlier commitment from MMP Chairman Ken Morrison. This will be the question we continue to ask.
&nbsp;
The proposal itself remains under active review with no final decision made by Minister Kamper or the Government. Our lease remains secure until 2035, the parliamentary petition debate and Cumberland City Council&rsquo;s call for a Portfolio Committee No. 4 inquiry are still live, and community opposition remains strong and coordinated.

<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 107%;">Email the NSW Legislative Council Portfolio Committee No. 4 at <a href="mailto:%20portfoliocommittee4@parliament.nsw.gov.au">portfoliocommittee4@parliament.nsw.gov.au</a> urging approval of the inquiry into the MMP proposal (reference Cumberland City Council&rsquo;s 19 November 2025 resolution and your personal reasons).</li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 107%;">Contact Minister Kamper, Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully, Minister for Housing Rose Jackson, Premier Chris Minns, and your local MPs.</li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 107%;">Continue supporting community action groups and our club&rsquo;s advocacy &ndash; don&rsquo;t forget the Pink Army event on Tuesday the 5th of May from 8am outside Parliament.</li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 107%;">If you have not yet done so, please add your voice to any remaining government channels.</li>

We will continue to press for the immediate public release of the full consultation report (as assured by Minister Kamper in Budget Estimates) and for a clear timeline for all stakeholders. This latest update from MMP is another step we can reference in our ongoing advocacy.

<h2>Weather and Rainfall</h2>
Hooley dooley, what a ride it has been this past month. While the average maximum temperature hovered just over 30 degrees, which might not seem too extreme, the humidity was relentless and made conditions challenging. February brought an impressive 190mm of rain, with a staggering 138mm falling within just over two hours right before the Carnarvon Cup. As a result, by the end of summer our main dams were completely full, and the course profile was thoroughly waterlogged. Here&rsquo;s hoping for a much drier Autumn ahead.
<h2>Greens</h2>
Despite the difficult weather, the greens have thrived and continued to improve. There is now full coverage across all green surfaces, and the plant health is excellent. The combination of warmth, rainfall, and humidity typically creates ideal conditions for pests and disease, but our greens have remained free from both. As anticipated, green speeds dipped slightly but stayed above the 9&rsquo;6&rdquo; benchmark.
Renovations were carried out under tough conditions and went as well as could be expected. The greens were verti-drained using 8mm hollow tines, then lightly sanded, rolled, and had soil amendments added. Subsequent rainfall helped to wash in the last of the sand, and we were able to cut the greens at 4mm just three days later. The cutting height will be gradually reduced to the standard 3-3.5mm over the coming days.
<h2>Tees</h2>
Couch grass has flourished in the current climate, which suits its preference for heat, rain, and humidity. As a result, the tees are in excellent condition, boasting full cover and a thick, healthy sward. New turf areas on holes 3 and 12 were opened for play in early February. Unfortunately, these areas suffered considerable damage from members, who failed to properly care for the turf, rarely filling divots with sand. Because of this, the new turf areas have been withdrawn from regular play. The team has worked hard to prepare and maintain these areas, as they have with all tees, making the situation especially disappointing.
<h2>Fairways</h2>
Like the couch grass, the Kikuyu fairways have responded positively to February&rsquo;s climate. To manage the vigorous growth, mowing frequency was increased to three times a week, alongside regular nutrition and applications of plant growth regulator. However, the drain area on the 4th fairway has become problematic due to a completely blocked stormwater pipe. We are actively working behind the scenes to identify the best solution for this issue.
<h2>Bunkers</h2>
The bunkers held up well until the heavy rainfall at the end of the month, after which they suffered some damage and loss of sand. We will be working through the bunkers to repair damage and replace the washed-out sand. On a positive note, the new bunkers on holes 11 and 9 performed exceptionally well; the recently installed drainage systems proved effective, as barely a grain of sand was out of place.
Members are reminded to avoid walking up the face of these bunkers and to always enter and exit from the lowest point.
