Saturday the 25th of August, 2018 marked the 90th
year anniversary of the forming of Carnarvon Golf Club. To celebrate this
significant milestone, members past and dignitaries celebrated in style at the
commemorative dinner. General Manager Mitch Nakic says “It was wonderful to see so
much interest from members past and present attend the event which continues to
epitomise the shared interest of the founders and all who made it the local
community icon it is today”. &nbsp;<o:p></o:p>In modern times Carnarvon Golf Club has been a leading
organisation in embracing the diversity of the local community and entertainment
during the night reflected that diversity with a contingent of Lady Members
performing traditional Korean dances with the Radio Bandits duo singing a lot
of Aussie favourites. <o:p></o:p>From humble beginnings to the present site Carnarvon Golf Club has
served the recreational needs of local and extended community but it is also a
registered bird sanctuary which contributes to the conservation of a valuable
Sydney metropolitan wildlife corridor. <o:p></o:p>









Whether you’re a golfer or not, we extend a warm invitation to
all in our local community to visit this great little club and experience the

Yet another dry month with just 4.2mm of rain falling in July, 93mm below average. We experienced seven frosts, two of them very heavy. We’ve also had four days over 24 degrees and an average max temp of 19.7 degrees.<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>The&nbsp;Greens are in great shape although several suffered slight burn from the heavy frost on the 15thand 16thof July. The lack of rain is affecting the hydrophobicity of the soil, making it difficult at times to get water into the profile. Our Par 3 tees have copped a beating more than the others with such high volumes of golfers. We will continue to “halve” the tees or shorten up holes when placing markers to spread the wear. A heavy tee renovation will be carried out in November, with regular feeding as they come out of dormancy.<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>Pigment was applied to some fairways to assist with presentation, this has made a huge difference when compared to the colour of green surrounds or rough where the pigment wasn’t applied.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>Turfing Ground Pearl patches has continued over the last month with the front 9 being completed. Another Ground Pearl trial is taking place on the 17thfairway, not trying to control the insect, more attempting to change the soil composition to accommodate Kikuyu re-growth/recovery.<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>Bunkers have remained fairly trouble free. We’ve spent three days blowing sand from grass faces to try to prolong the life of turf in these areas. Bunkers on the 10th, 1stand 3rdhave been slightly modified to prevent golf balls stopping under a grass lip, a small sand face was created in each of these bunkers.<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>An electrical fault was discovered in the irrigation on the 10thgreen. New wires were installed and the system is operating at 98%, with just the 7thtee requiring attention. Wiring faults have been our biggest irrigation problem over the last few months.<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>The new path on the 5thhas been completed and traffic from this path will now be directed more into the right-hand side rough rather than into the fairway, reducing the risk of wear/bare areas leading onto the fairway.<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>We are in the process of replacing tee ropes with white chains. These chains have movable “gaps” to spread wear in high traffic areas. We ask that&nbsp;ALL golfers use these gaps to assist in the process. <img src="https://qcC7iEAM4RaGvCB5T.client.v2.comarkdigital.com/v2-api/files/9ZcboRcYEYDTRdDey/url/course6.png" alt="course6.png" style="width: 100%;"> <o:p></o:p><o:p></o:p>

Carnarvon would like to congratulate Ebony Park who represented Carnarvon in the 'Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG) 12 &amp; Under State Age Championships'. The Championships were held over 4 days at Penrith and Dunheved on Monday 16th - Friday 20th July 2018. Rachel Lee (North Ryde) and Ebony Park (Carnarvon) are leading the Nett Division, with Skye Johnson moving to third after a Nett 71 in the second round.Thursday 19 July 3:00pm 10 Years &amp; Under 10 Year Old superstar Nara Shin (Ryde Parramatta) has one hand on the trophy after shooting the best round of the tournament in the Girls Divsion on moving day. Shin was the first girl to break 80 for the week, recording a five over par 79 on the testing Dunheved layout. Allana Assabgy (Stonecutters Ridge) moved into second, whilst Rachel Lee (North Ryde) and Ebony Park (Carnarvon) continue to do battle in the Nett Division, with the trophy going down to the wire on the final day.Friday 20 July 3:00pm 10 Years &amp; Under 10 Year Old superstar Nara Shin (Ryde Parramatta) gave her rivals no chance in the 10 Years and Under Division, cruising to a 30 shot victory. 10 year old Shin was so impressive her score would have been good enough to finish 3rd overall! The new path on the 5th is starting to take shape quite nicely as shown in the photo.A total of 76mm fell in June and after being so dry the water was absorbed into the ground quickly. We verti-drained the Greens with 8mm solid tines to improve water and air movement in the soil profile and the Greens are clean of any Winter disease.An application of pigment was applied to the Tees in early and late June to help with colour and presentation, which has produced a side effect of higher temperatures in the micro-climate, encouraging some winter growth.The Fairways were fed early in the month to encourage a bit of growth. A repeat application will be completed in early July. A further 300m of turf has been laid in bare patches as we work our way through the course. Also in late June the “Imants” root pruner was hired for 3 days. All 18 fairways, most greens and several tees were pruned of invading tree roots.All sand over drainage lines in bunkers was replaced during June, reducing the chances of any water pooling in the bunkers. Another 20 tonne of sand was added to shallow areas.Stay tuned for more updates regarding the course works

All Golf Clubs have an ongoing problem with the pace of play and Carnarvon is not immune to the problem. It is possible that 18 holes of golf can vary between&nbsp;3 ½ hours and 5 ½ hours on the same course on any given day. There are many factors that contribute to the lengthened time of&nbsp;5 ½ hours. Some would argue that the set up of the course, speed of the greens, length of the rough and the weather are what makes the round take so long. There is however another factor that needs to be considered and it is "that player".That Player<ul><li>Is usually unaware of his or her place in the field and</li><li>that their actions and attitude directly affect all the players behind the group, potentially slowing down 180 players, yes on both nines.</li><li>Is unaware that the time taken to put on a glove go through a pre-shot routine and chose a club to hit should all be done prior to their turn to hit, while other players are hitting their shot.</li><li>Is unaware that their playing partners are rushing their shots to make up time but are too polite to tell "that player"to hurry up.</li><li>Has not noticed that their playing partners are moving to the next tee and hitting off in an effort to catch up to the group in front while "that player"is still putting out. </li></ul> Things to be considered by all players including "that player".<ul><li>The earlier you tee off the more responsible you are for the pace of play</li><li>Your place in the field is right behind the group in front, not in front of the group following.</li><li>4 ½ hours is not a quick round.</li><li>Consider the players behind and their frustration having to wait to play every shot.</li><li>Arrive at the course 20 minutes ahead of your tee time and be ready to play at least 10 minutes prior to your tee time.</li><li>If spoken to by the Pro Shop Staff or Committee Members about your place in the field, try to catch up </li></ul>Don't be "That Player".

Dear Members,<o:p></o:p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<o:p></o:p>I am writing this
letter to inform you of some changes that have occurred within Carnarvon Golf
Club in the last month and to offer an apology to a very long-standing Director
of the club.<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>Firstly, I offer
my very sincere apology to Nick Stoves for the omission of his name as a
director in the current fixture book. Nick is a current director of the club
and has been on the Board for 21 years with 6 years as President and 2 years as
Vice President. The omission was not purposely done but was a mistake that was
not detected until the printed booklets were recieved. Proof reading will be a
priority before the printing of the next fixture book.<o:p></o:p><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>











Ron McKellar
tendered his resignation from the Board of Carnarvon Golf Club at the last
meeting of the Board held on 5 December 2017. Ron has just retired from the
work force and has moved north to Gorakan on the Central Coast of NSW. Ron has
served on the Board for a total of 8 years and his financial knowledge and
common-sense approach will be missed. The vacant position on the Board has been
filled with the appointment of Mark Abood, who will provide the Board with his
financial expertise gained from his position with the Auditor Generals’
Department prior to his retirement. Mark will hold the position on the Board

Carnarvon Golf Club began in 1927 when the game was played on an informal basis before being regularised at the first Annual General Meeting in August, 1928. The first President was Alderman W.R. Atkinson of Lidcombe Council and one of the Vice-Presidents was the Hon. J.T. Lang, Premier of New South Wales.The course which measured 4277 yards with a bogey of 75, was situated on the northern side of Parramatta Road and covered the following area : <ul><li>Western Boundary: Wetherill St. </li><li>Northern Boundary: Derby St.</li><li>Eastern Boundary: Haslam’s Creek and Hill Road.</li><li>Southern Boundary: Adderley St. Day St. then Parramatta Road to Hill Road.</li></ul>The area covered by the course included vacant proposed factory sites, unmade roads, an agistment paddock of the State Abbatoirs and portion of Southian’s dairy. The greens were the natural grasses mowed at the weekends by the members’ own push mowers. The holes were jam tins. The course was named after a large sign, visible from Parramatta Road, advertising factory sites for sale on Carnarvon Hill Estate. This sign is regarded as the first clubhouse as members drove nails into it on which to hang their coats and other paraphernalia. The first real clubhouse, known as “the Shack, was erected in 1929 on the corner of Day and Derby Streets and comprised two rooms, one 10 feet by 10 feet for members and the other 8 feet by 8 feet for associates with a 9 feet by 4 feet verandah. In 1931 the old Auburn Ambulance Station was purchased, towed to the site and added to The Shack. As tenure over the original course was tenuous at best a move was made to what became known as the “old course” in late 1932 with the official opening in 1933.The old course was located to the north of Fariola St. and occupied two paddocks owned by Newington State Hospital and a paddock to the south of Holker St. owned by Lidcombe Council. The lease from Newington State Hospital was for fifteen years under permissive occupancy tenure and covered tees and greens only. The greens were enclosed with post and rail fences as protection from our bovine co-tenants of the hospital dairy herd. The clubhouse was moved to the northern side of the eastern end of Fariola St in 1933 when extensive additions and alterations were effected. Things moved along swimmingly for the next ten years or so until the outbreak of World WarII. Our biggest disaster came on 8 March, 1943 when the clubhouse and the top paddock were taken over by the US Navy necessitating yet another move. It was decided to continue with a nine hole course consisting of the bottom paddock for seven holes with the remaining two holes in the council paddock. This became known as the Silverwater course. To accommodate a Clubhouse the committee resolved on 20 April, 1043 to purchase thecottage in Clyde St. Auburn and the adjacent eleven vacant blocks for 470 pounds Following the convention of the time it was necessary to pay 100 pounds “key money” to obtain vacant possession of the property. With renovations the cottage served as a Clubhouse until the move to the present course. The old cottage went through many years of modification, renovation, partial demolition and rebirth as a motor boat club, Auburn Businessman’s Club and is currently Dooley’s On The Water. The move to the present course was foreshadowed as early as 1943. The new course was an amalgamation of two contiguous areas separated by Walters Rd. which originally ran through from Nottinghill Rd to Joseph St. The area between Leila St. and Walters Rd. was the Lidcombe Sports and Showground and the area between Walters Rd and Amy St was the western grazing paddock of Lidcombe State Hospital for its prize winning herd of Holstein dairy cows. The areas were amalgamated, Walters Rd closed and the area leased to Carnarvon Golf Club in 1947. The course was built between the years 1947 to 1949 to a design by Arthur East. The Clubhouse was built over the same period. Due to the difficulty in obtaining building material in the post-war years the Clubhouse was built from material obtained by demolishing the Fariola St building together with the Liverpool and Lidcombe Soldiers’ Halls. The Clubhouse and new course were opened in December, 1949. Additions and renovations kept the building functional until 1998 when the Club came under increasing pressure to bring the structure up to the required standards. The cost involved was considered uneconomic considering the condition of the underpinnings. The Board voted to build a new Clubhouse and then demolish the old building. This was completed in December, 1999. Our present course presented a horticultural challenge to the earlier Committees and course superintendents as they battled with an area of poor clay based soil, gravel patches and rock outcrops. The Committee tendered for and won the contract to remove manure from the holding paddocks at Flemington Saleyards on the site of the present Flemington Markets. The contract ran from 1957 to 1963 and most fairways were covered to a depth of six to eight inches with mostly sheep manure. This was done half a fairway width at a time to enable play to continue. This combined with automatic fairway and greens watering of more recent years coupled with extensive drainage projects, has produced the lush course we have today. To quote the late C.W.Phillips President, from his address at the A.G.M. of 27th March, 1943 :- “Finally we have a good Club built by ourselves for ourselves and those we are happy to have with us and the old Carnarvon spirit will win through notwithstanding”

 <h3>GOLF CARTS</h3>
 We have 24 fully maintained Golf Carts for your use at $50 per cart for 18 holes. Hand pulled buggies must have wide tyres. Alternatively, these may be hired from the Proshop at $5 each.
 <h3>EQUIPMENT HIRE</h3>
 Club hire is available for both left and right handed players. These can be hired from the Proshop at a cost of $25 per set.
 <h3>DRESS RULES</h3>
 We wish to maintain a dress standard commensurate with the game of golf. For men, tailored shorts and trousers, shirts must have sleeves and collars. White short socks may be worn with a length of at least 75mm above the ankle.
 Items such as football jumpers and shorts, stubbies, brief shorts, athletic shorts and singlets, tracksuits, beach attire, dirty and worn clothes are not appropriate. Any person arriving for golf not properly attired will not be allowed on the course.
 <h3>DRINKS ON THE COURSE</h3>
 A drinks cart is available for hire at a cost of $40 per hour with a minimum of 3 hours. A staff member is included in this charge to drive the cart in accordance with RSA law. All beverages must be purchased from the Club.
 <h3>BOOKINGS</h3>
 Tentative bookings will be held for a period of 10 days only, after which time the date will be released. A non-refundable deposit of $500 is to be paid with each confirmed booking. If the function proceeds, the total deposit will be credited to the customer’s account.
 Menus, beverage arrangements, entertainment, audio-visual requirements, room plans, starting and finishing times must be confirmed in writing 14 days prior to the function.
 Final numbers must be confirmed no later than 7 days prior to the day of the event. These numbers may be increased up to 48 hours prior to the day, but not decreased.

In 2025, we hosted our inaugural Mark Hughes Foundation Beanie for Brain Cancer Charity Golf Day and raised an amazing $15,088 for the Foundation! We are still so thankful to everyone who contributed to the days success. Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children, and adults aged under 40 in Australia, yet alarmingly very little is known about brain cancer, its causes or how its treated. 
 That&rsquo;s why Carnarvon Golf Club has decided to help for the second year! Join us for our upcoming Mark Hughes Foundation Beanie for Brain Cancer Charity Golf Day on Friday 19 June 2026, to help us raise much needed funds to help find a cure to brain cancer. We have set an even bigger goal this year - aiming to raise more than $20K for the MHF. Every team that registers will see a portion of their entry fee, made as a donation. Plus we will raise funds through our auctions and raffle.

Become a Member of Carnarvon Golf Club today
The following outlines the process involved in becoming a Member of Carnarvon Golf Club.
Subscription levels are set annually by the Board each year, commencing 1 September. Subscription rates may be adjusted to reflect a pro rata amount, relative to the remaining months of the financial year.
 
1. Completing the Application Form with Application Fee
<ul>
<li>Please ensure that all sections of your application form have been completed in full. An incomplete form may delay your application.</li>
<li>Application forms are available from the reception area of the Club, or may be filled out via our online membership form.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Completed application forms can be submitted to the office in person or electronically.</li>
<li>Please note, a non-refundable application fee of $350 is required to secure a place on the Carnarvon Golf Club wait list. This excludes those applying for Intermediate 1, Junior or Sub Cadet Categories. The application fee is non-transferrable</li>
<li>Payments can be made by cheque or cash if an application is submitted in person. Applications sent by email, must make payment via credit card.</li>
</ul>

2. Approval
<ul>
<li>Once an application form has been received, the form will be posted onto our Members' Notice Board for a period of not less than 7 days.</li>
<li>The application will be considered at the next Board of Directors Meeting. The Board reserves the right to reject any application without providing a reason for their decision. In the event an application is rejected, the application fee will be refunded.</li>
<li>All applicants will be invited to and must attend an interview with the respective Captains.</li>
</ul>

3. Fees
<ul>
<li>All new members must then pay the annual subscription or pro rata amount relative to the remaining months of the current financial year.</li>
<li>Annual subscriptions may be paid in installments, that being monthly* or half yearly*.</li>
<li>*Please be aware that the Club does not offer monthly or half yearly memberships and members must ensure that the annual subscription is always payable in full, regardless of any installment methods that may be allowed from time to time.</li>
</ul>

4. Payment&nbsp;

<li>Once approved by the Board of Directors, new members will receive a tax invoice for their membership.</li>
<li>Upon payment of the prescribed fees, you will be issued with; Your Membership Card, Fixtures Book &amp; Rules of Golf Book</li>

Conditions of Entry to Competitions
As of 1 January 2015 all visitors must have played a minimum of 3 of their last 20 games at a Home Club nominated by GOLF Link. &nbsp;Failure to comply will make players ineligible to win all trophies, including ball competition.

Following the January 2026 update, we have received further direct communication from Metropolitan Memorial Parks (MMP). This provides important clarity on the consultation feedback process, and I wanted to share it with you immediately.
&nbsp;
Current Situation as of 20 March 2026
&nbsp;
Yesterday (19 March 2026) MMP CEO Denise Ora advised: &ldquo;MMP has now completed their collation and consolidation of the consultation feedback and have provided this to the Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
She confirmed that their website will be updated with this wording. However, when asked whether this also means the report has been supplied to the Minister, Ms. Ora stated she &ldquo;can&rsquo;t comment that it means it is with the Minister yet&rdquo; and can &ldquo;only comment that we have provided to the department (that is truly all I know). That is the process.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
She also undertook to advise on any additional updates &ldquo;as and when I can.&rdquo;
&nbsp;
No timeline was provided for the public release of the report or for sharing it with key stakeholders (including Carnarvon Golf Club), despite the earlier commitment from MMP Chairman Ken Morrison. This will be the question we continue to ask.
&nbsp;
The proposal itself remains under active review with no final decision made by Minister Kamper or the Government. Our lease remains secure until 2035, the parliamentary petition debate and Cumberland City Council&rsquo;s call for a Portfolio Committee No. 4 inquiry are still live, and community opposition remains strong and coordinated.
&nbsp;

The Board and I urge all members, residents and interested parties to do the following:

<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 107%;">Continue supporting community action groups and our club&rsquo;s advocacy &ndash; don&rsquo;t forget the Pink Army event on Tuesday the 5th of May from 8am outside Parliament.</li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 107%;">If you have not yet done so, please add your voice to any remaining government channels.</li>

We will continue to press for the immediate public release of the full consultation report (as assured by Minister Kamper in Budget Estimates) and for a clear timeline for all stakeholders. This latest update from MMP is another step we can reference in our ongoing advocacy.

<h2>Weather and Rainfall</h2>
Hooley dooley, what a ride it has been this past month. While the average maximum temperature hovered just over 30 degrees, which might not seem too extreme, the humidity was relentless and made conditions challenging. February brought an impressive 190mm of rain, with a staggering 138mm falling within just over two hours right before the Carnarvon Cup. As a result, by the end of summer our main dams were completely full, and the course profile was thoroughly waterlogged. Here&rsquo;s hoping for a much drier Autumn ahead.
<h2>Greens</h2>
Despite the difficult weather, the greens have thrived and continued to improve. There is now full coverage across all green surfaces, and the plant health is excellent. The combination of warmth, rainfall, and humidity typically creates ideal conditions for pests and disease, but our greens have remained free from both. As anticipated, green speeds dipped slightly but stayed above the 9&rsquo;6&rdquo; benchmark.
Renovations were carried out under tough conditions and went as well as could be expected. The greens were verti-drained using 8mm hollow tines, then lightly sanded, rolled, and had soil amendments added. Subsequent rainfall helped to wash in the last of the sand, and we were able to cut the greens at 4mm just three days later. The cutting height will be gradually reduced to the standard 3-3.5mm over the coming days.
<h2>Tees</h2>
Couch grass has flourished in the current climate, which suits its preference for heat, rain, and humidity. As a result, the tees are in excellent condition, boasting full cover and a thick, healthy sward. New turf areas on holes 3 and 12 were opened for play in early February. Unfortunately, these areas suffered considerable damage from members, who failed to properly care for the turf, rarely filling divots with sand. Because of this, the new turf areas have been withdrawn from regular play. The team has worked hard to prepare and maintain these areas, as they have with all tees, making the situation especially disappointing.
<h2>Fairways</h2>
Like the couch grass, the Kikuyu fairways have responded positively to February&rsquo;s climate. To manage the vigorous growth, mowing frequency was increased to three times a week, alongside regular nutrition and applications of plant growth regulator. However, the drain area on the 4th fairway has become problematic due to a completely blocked stormwater pipe. We are actively working behind the scenes to identify the best solution for this issue.
<h2>Bunkers</h2>
The bunkers held up well until the heavy rainfall at the end of the month, after which they suffered some damage and loss of sand. We will be working through the bunkers to repair damage and replace the washed-out sand. On a positive note, the new bunkers on holes 11 and 9 performed exceptionally well; the recently installed drainage systems proved effective, as barely a grain of sand was out of place.
Members are reminded to avoid walking up the face of these bunkers and to always enter and exit from the lowest point.
