Carnarvon Golf Course Update to Members and Local Residents - May

To the Members and local community around Carnarvon Golf Course,

Further to the update given at the AGM, we wanted to share a bit more about what came up in our recent meeting (post-AGM) with the Metropolitan Memorial Parks (MMP) to keep you updated and in the loop:

  • Metropolitan Memorial Parks Update: MMP is working on recommending potential sites to the minister in the coming months, but nothing moves forward without the Minister’s approval for a formal community consultation process. Once that approval is given, there’ll be a structured opportunity for everyone to share their thoughts, and all feedback will be officially recorded in a formal process before being considered by the Minister. This is different from earlier submissions, which weren’t logged in the same way. They pointed to Moore Park as a great example of how consultation can shape outcomes. MMP is clearly committed to engaging the community and stakeholders as per the process provided by Minister Kamper.
  • Site & Land Update: The Minister has committed to honouring the current lease for members, which is reassuring. Cumberland Council are determined to fight any proposed changes, including to Coleman Park, which MMP has confirmed is part of the Crown land package being considered and is also under review. Also, Landcare’s withdrawal from working with Carnarvon caught MMP by surprise, and it’s something we’re keeping an eye on as discussions continue.
  • Our Plan: We’re actively working on a submission that outlines why Carnarvon is an unsuitable site for a cemetery (including environmental, indigenous, community, and health arguments). Alongside this, we’re developing a document focused on long-term improvements to the site that would benefit both the Club’s members and the wider community, supporting our intention to extend our lease for the site well past 2035, making an alternative decision near impossible. These efforts will help strengthen our case and vision for the future.

We’re staying on top of these developments and will share more as things progress. Thanks for your ongoing support and interest!
