Weather and Rainfall
August recorded 47 mm of rainfall. Although this resulted in damp conditions in some areas, the rainfall was beneficial overall. Warmer weather has already commenced, with an average maximum temperature of approximately 21°C. Early spring conditions are forecast to be particularly warm, indicating the potential for a very hot and dry summer.
Greens
The greens entered August in excellent condition, recording average speeds of 10 feet 6 inches prior to the scheduled renovation works on 19 August. The renovation program comprised hollow coring with 12 mm tines, the application of soil amendments and topdressing. The greens were allowed several days to recover before being cut at 4 mm seven days later. Cutting height was returned to 3 mm ten days after coring, and the greens have since made a complete recovery. They remain in excellent condition heading into spring. Needle-tining will continue throughout the warmer months to support air and water movement through the soil profile.
Tees
The tees are beginning to show signs of growth with the warmer weather; however, significant improvement is unlikely until overnight temperatures remain consistently above 15°C. The 3rd tee has performed reasonably well but will again require additional maintenance to preserve its condition under the anticipated summer workload. The 12th tee is currently showing greater wear, although improvement is expected as temperatures increase. Arboricultural work is also required in this area to improve sunlight exposure.
Fairways
The absence of standing water on the fairways during winter has contributed positively to turf quality. The fairways are currently in very good condition. Preventative treatments for pests and disease have been completed, together with applications of wetting agents and fertiliser to support spring growth. The 11th fairway is showing signs of improvement following a sustained reduction in traffic. Returfing of bare areas affected by Ground Pearl was also undertaken on several fairways during August and will continue into spring.
Irrigation
The team has been addressing leaks and defective sprinklers in preparation for the warmer months. Raising greenside sprinklers has also been prioritised to improve the efficiency and accuracy of water distribution.
