Carnarvon Golf Club began in 1927 when the game was played on an informal basis before being regularised at the first Annual General Meeting in August, 1928. The first President was Alderman W.R. Atkinson of Lidcombe Council and one of the Vice-Presidents was the Hon. J.T. Lang, Premier of New South Wales. The course which measured 4277 yards with a bogey of 75, was situated on the northern side of Parramatta Road and covered the following area :

Western Boundary: Wetherill St.

Northern Boundary: Derby St.

Eastern Boundary: Haslam’s Creek and Hill Road.

Southern Boundary: Adderley St. Day St. then Parramatta Road to Hill Road.

The area covered by the course included vacant proposed factory sites, unmade roads, an agistment paddock of the State Abbatoirs and portion of Southian’s dairy. The greens were the natural grasses mowed at the weekends by the members’ own push mowers. The holes were jam tins. The course was named after a large sign, visible from Parramatta Road, advertising factory sites for sale on Carnarvon Hill Estate. This sign is regarded as the first clubhouse as members drove nails into it on which to hang their coats and other paraphernalia. The first real clubhouse, known as “the Shack, was erected in 1929 on the corner of Day and Derby Streets and comprised two rooms, one 10 feet by 10 feet for members and the other 8 feet by 8 feet for associates with a 9 feet by 4 feet verandah. In 1931 the old Auburn Ambulance Station was purchased, towed to the site and added to The Shack. As tenure over the original course was tenuous at best a move was made to what became known as the “old course” in late 1932 with the official opening in 1933.The old course was located to the north of Fariola St. and occupied two paddocks owned by Newington State Hospital and a paddock to the south of Holker St. owned by Lidcombe Council. The lease from Newington State Hospital was for fifteen years under permissive occupancy tenure and covered tees and greens only. The greens were enclosed with post and rail fences as protection from our bovine co-tenants of the hospital dairy herd. The clubhouse was moved to the northern side of the eastern end of Fariola St in 1933 when extensive additions and alterations were effected. Things moved along swimmingly for the next ten years or so until the outbreak of World WarII. Our biggest disaster came on 8 March, 1943 when the clubhouse and the top paddock were taken over by the US Navy necessitating yet another move. It was decided to continue with a nine hole course consisting of the bottom paddock for seven holes with the remaining two holes in the council paddock. This became known as the Silverwater course. To accommodate a Clubhouse the committee resolved on 20 April, 1043 to purchase thecottage in Clyde St. Auburn and the adjacent eleven vacant blocks for 470 pounds Following the convention of the time it was necessary to pay 100 pounds “key money” to obtain vacant possession of the property. With renovations the cottage served as a Clubhouse until the move to the present course. The old cottage went through many years of modification, renovation, partial demolition and rebirth as a motor boat club, Auburn Businessman’s Club and is currently Dooley’s On The Water. The move to the present course was foreshadowed as early as 1943. The new course was an amalgamation of two contiguous areas separated by Walters Rd. which originally ran through from Nottinghill Rd to Joseph St. The area between Leila St. and Walters Rd. was the Lidcombe Sports and Showground and the area between Walters Rd and Amy St was the western grazing paddock of Lidcombe State Hospital for its prize winning herd of Holstein dairy cows. The areas were amalgamated, Walters Rd closed and the area leased to Carnarvon Golf Club in 1947. The course was built between the years 1947 to 1949 to a design by Arthur East. The Clubhouse was built over the same period. Due to the difficulty in obtaining building material in the post-war years the Clubhouse was built from material obtained by demolishing the Fariola St building together with the Liverpool and Lidcombe Soldiers’ Halls. The Clubhouse and new course were opened in December, 1949. Additions and renovations kept the building functional until 1998 when the Club came under increasing pressure to bring the structure up to the required standards. The cost involved was considered uneconomic considering the condition of the underpinnings. The Board voted to build a new Clubhouse and then demolish the old building. This was completed in December, 1999. Our present course presented a horticultural challenge to the earlier Committees and course superintendents as they battled with an area of poor clay based soil, gravel patches and rock outcrops. The Committee tendered for and won the contract to remove manure from the holding paddocks at Flemington Saleyards on the site of the present Flemington Markets. The contract ran from 1957 to 1963 and most fairways were covered to a depth of six to eight inches with mostly sheep manure. This was done half a fairway width at a time to enable play to continue. This combined with automatic fairway and greens watering of more recent years coupled with extensive drainage projects, has produced the lush course we have today. To quote the late C.W.Phillips President, from his address at the A.G.M. of 27th March, 1943 :- “Finally we have a good Club built by ourselves for ourselves and those we are happy to have with us and the old Carnarvon spirit will win through notwithstanding”

Gerry Hyde began his golf journey at just nine years old, developing his game through the junior ranks at Cumberland Golf Club, where he was a member from 1993 to 2000. His early dedication to the sport laid a strong foundation for a competitive career, including representing Cumberland in Major Pennants from 2002 to 2004.
In 2006, Gerry took the next step in his Professional development by becoming a trainee member of the PGA, and by 2010 he had earned full membership with the Australian PGA. His commitment to both playing and coaching has been a defining feature of his career.
Gerry joined Carnarvon Golf Club as an Assistant Professional in 2012, where he spent over a decade honing his skills, mentoring players, and contributing to the club’s golfing community. In July 2025, he was appointed Head Professional at Carnarvon, marking a significant milestone and recognition of his experience, leadership, and dedication to the game. Luke McSweeny Associate Professional

Carnarvon received a letter of correspondence from Member - Russell Cox, recently and believe it’s worth the read.
We appreciate all who advocate for Carnarvon, as we simply do not want to be converted into cemetery space.
Russell’s personal story allows us to look beyond golf as a sport and understand the true human and community value of Carnarvon Golf Club.
Have a read below The Man Who Looks Away to Play
On a late afternoon at Carnarvon Golf Club, I played alongside a golfer who reminded me that golf is about far more than scorecards, handicaps, and trophies.
He has glaucoma.
Most golfers stand over the ball and focus intently on it before swinging. We look directly at the ball. He cannot. To see it properly, he has to turn his head almost at a right angle. While the rest of us address the ball straight on, he is effectively looking away from it.
Yet he still plays.
He still walks the fairways, enjoys the company of his mates, shares a laugh after a wayward shot, and experiences the satisfaction of a well-struck drive.
Watching him was inspiring. Not because he was seeking sympathy. Quite the opposite. He simply wanted to enjoy a game he loves.
It made me think about what a golf course really is.
To some people, Carnarvon Golf Club may appear to be just a large piece of open land. To its members, it is something far more important. It is a community. It is a place where retirees stay active, where friendships are formed, where people recover from illness, where mental health is supported, and where people with physical limitations can continue enjoying life.
The golfer I played with is a perfect example.
Without facilities like Carnarvon, opportunities for people living with vision impairment become increasingly limited. Golf provides exercise, social interaction, fresh air, purpose, routine, and a sense of achievement. It gives people a reason to get out of the house and engage with others. These benefits cannot be measured simply by the value of the land on which the course sits.
When politicians view a golf course only through the lens of development opportunities, they miss the human stories that unfold there every day.
The debate about proposals by Premier Chris Minns' government to convert portions of golf course land to other uses often centres on economics, housing, or planning. But there is another side to the equation: the people.
People like the gentleman with glaucoma.
If Carnarvon Golf Club were to disappear, it would not just be the loss of fairways and greens. It would be the loss of a place where someone facing significant visual challenges can still participate in sport, enjoy companionship, and retain a connection to the community.
During the same period, I also played with two junior brothers, one of whom is battling leukemia. He was never going to win a competition. In truth, he was fortunate simply to have the strength and stamina to complete the round. Yet that didn't seem to matter. More than anything, he just wanted to play golf. He wanted to be out on the course, enjoying the fresh air, spending time with his brother and fellow golfers, rather than being cooped up at home.
Watching him walk those fairways was another reminder of what golf is really about. For some people, success in golf is measured by trophies, grades, handicaps and prizes. But the game's real value lies elsewhere. Golf teaches resilience, gratitude, patience, humility and perspective. It teaches us to appreciate opportunities that others can only wish for.
Standing on the course with a young boy facing challenges far greater than a difficult bunker shot or a missed putt, it was impossible not to reflect on what truly matters. Some people spend their golfing lives chasing victories. He was simply grateful for the chance to play. In many ways, that made him one of the day's biggest winners.
The value of Carnarvon is not measured in hectares.
It is measured in stories.
Stories of veterans, retirees, families, and people overcoming physical challenges. Stories of friendships that have lasted decades. Stories of people who continue to find joy, dignity and belonging despite the obstacles life places in front of them.
And perhaps the most powerful story of all is that of a golfer who has to look away from the ball to see it, yet keeps turning up every week because golf gives him something worth seeing.
That is what Carnarvon Golf Club really represents.
Not a parcel of land.
A community worth preserving.
- R. Cox

The Man Who Looks Away to Play

coursemanagersupdatearoundthegreensinseptember2026

Rainfall/Weather Spring commenced with particularly dry conditions, with only 13 mm of rainfall recorded during September. The average maximum temperature exceeded 24 degrees, including several days above 30 degrees, which contributed to the dry conditions. Substantial rainfall in early October should provide a sound foundation for the final quarter of the year.
Greens The renovation period is now well behind us, and the greens continue to improve. The average green speed in September was just under 11 ft, with surfaces running true and smoothly. I am extremely pleased with the performance and condition of the greens as we approach the Championship season. Later in the month, the greens will be solid tined to reduce compaction and improve aeration within the profile. This will be followed in early November by mini coring and top dressing. Product is also being applied to the green perimeters to control kikuyu and couch encroachment.
Tees The tees are responding well to the warmer weather and increased sunlight. With the corresponding increase in growth, the tees have been solid-tined to improve air and water movement within the profile and to alleviate compaction. They have also received an application of organic fertiliser to support further development.
Fairways The dry conditions in September clearly highlighted the impact of tree root encroachment around several fairways. Familiar problem areas, including the 4th, were most affected, with turf health declining along the right hand side where tree roots compete for water and nutrients. Unfortunately, irrigation alone cannot offset the significant water demand of these trees. Root pruning has been completed in several affected areas, with further work scheduled as time permits. Additional turfing has also been undertaken in areas affected by ground pearl across several fairways, with a further 400 m² planned for October. The 11th fairway is performing well and continues to improve each week.
Bunkers The bunkers performed well throughout September, although heavy rainfall in early October presented renewed challenges. The bunkers on the 6th, together with the other newly constructed bunkers, performed particularly well and remained unaffected by the rain.

PINK ARMY Golf & Open Day

noticetomembersgeneralmanagertendershisresgination

Dear Members,
On behalf of the Board, I wish to advise that our General Manager, Adam McGregor, has tendered his resignation from his position with the Club. Due to some pre-arranged Annual Leave, Adam's last working day will be October the 22nd.
We would like to thank Adam for his service and commitment during his time with the Club. Since Adam joined in August 2024 the club's financial performance has improved significantly. He has worked tirelessly on dealing with the cemetery issue and has no doubt improved our position in that space. The Board have enjoyed working with Adam and have valued his contributions. We wish him every success in his future endeavours.
The Board will now commence the recruitment process to appoint a new General Manager. Our focus will be on finding the right person to continue building on the Club's strengths and supporting our members, staff, and future development.
In the interim, the Board will work closely with staff to ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the Club and to maintain the high level of service that members expect.
We will keep members informed as the recruitment process progresses and will provide further updates when appropriate.
Thank you for your continued support of our Club.
Regards Peter Richardson President
A few words from Adam McGregor
Dear Members,
As Peter has outlined, I will be leaving Carnarvon, with my last working day on the 22nd of October before taking some pre-arranged leave. I do so with mixed feelings. I have put a great deal into the Club since joining in August 2024 and there is much about Carnarvon, its people and its future that I will miss.
I am proud of the progress we have made together. The Club’s financial performance has improved significantly, and considerable work has gone into representing Carnarvon’s interests in relation to the cemetery proposal. These matters affect the Club’s future, and they have been a major focus of my time here.
That progress reflects the efforts of our staff and the support of members. I particularly want to thank the team for their hard work, their willingness to embrace change and their commitment to keeping the Club running every day.
I believe Carnarvon still has enormous potential. We have a course to be proud of, a committed membership and opportunities to strengthen the business and develop what the Club offers. There is more work ahead, but there is also a great deal worth building on.
Thank you to the members who have made me welcome, supported our efforts and taken the time to share their ideas and feedback. I have valued those conversations and the relationships formed along the way.
My focus over the remaining days is on supporting a smooth handover. I leave proud of what we have achieved and wishing Carnarvon every success in the years ahead.
Kind regards, Adam McGregor

Weather and Rainfall August recorded 47 mm of rainfall. Although this resulted in damp conditions in some areas, the rainfall was beneficial overall. Warmer weather has already commenced, with an average maximum temperature of approximately 21°C. Early spring conditions are forecast to be particularly warm, indicating the potential for a very hot and dry summer.
Greens The greens entered August in excellent condition, recording average speeds of 10 feet 6 inches prior to the scheduled renovation works on 19 August. The renovation program comprised hollow coring with 12 mm tines, the application of soil amendments and topdressing. The greens were allowed several days to recover before being cut at 4 mm seven days later. Cutting height was returned to 3 mm ten days after coring, and the greens have since made a complete recovery. They remain in excellent condition heading into spring. Needle-tining will continue throughout the warmer months to support air and water movement through the soil profile.
Tees The tees are beginning to show signs of growth with the warmer weather; however, significant improvement is unlikely until overnight temperatures remain consistently above 15°C. The 3rd tee has performed reasonably well but will again require additional maintenance to preserve its condition under the anticipated summer workload. The 12th tee is currently showing greater wear, although improvement is expected as temperatures increase. Arboricultural work is also required in this area to improve sunlight exposure.
Fairways The absence of standing water on the fairways during winter has contributed positively to turf quality. The fairways are currently in very good condition. Preventative treatments for pests and disease have been completed, together with applications of wetting agents and fertiliser to support spring growth. The 11th fairway is showing signs of improvement following a sustained reduction in traffic. Returfing of bare areas affected by Ground Pearl was also undertaken on several fairways during August and will continue into spring.
Irrigation The team has been addressing leaks and defective sprinklers in preparation for the warmer months. Raising greenside sprinklers has also been prioritised to improve the efficiency and accuracy of water distribution.

Course Managers Report - Around the Greens in August 2026

coursemanagersreportaroundthegreensinjuly2026

Rainfall/Weather As everyone’s probably noticed, winter has been pretty kind to us so far. The average maximum temperature has been just over 18 degrees, and there’s barely been any frost to worry about. We had 31mm of rain early in the month, which slowed things down a bit, but the dry run since then has really topped off a great mid-winter stretch.
Greens The greens are looking fantastic. They’re firm, which is normal for this time of year, rolling true, and in really healthy shape. Overall, I’m very happy with how they’ve performed over the past month. There are one or two small signs of Brown Patch showing up on a couple of greens, but these should clear up through our regular fungicide program. Green speed averaged 10’4 during July. The greens were verti-drained with solid tines at the start of the month. Major renovations are set to begin on Wednesday 19 August, with hollow coring using half-inch tines, soil amendments, and top dressing. Renovation week also marks the start of our growing season as we say goodbye to winter and get ready for what’s expected to be a hot, dry summer.
Tees There’s not a huge amount to report on the tees. The couch is holding its colour and density well across most tees, but as expected, the par 3s and shaded tees are struggling a bit in the cold. Divot repair, especially on the 12th and 16th tees, has been almost non-existent, which is disappointing to see. Some tree work is planned around the 7th and 12th tees to help open those areas up to more light.
Fairways The fairways have enjoyed a winter without flooding or waterlogging, which has made a big difference. Turf is in great condition across all areas outside the Ground Pearl (GP) affected patches. We’ve done some more turfing on GP areas on the 10th and 17th fairways, and that work will continue into the growing season. If conditions stay favourable, we’ll carry out a major fairway renovation in November. The 11th hole has also been closed for a few weeks to give that fairway time to recover.
Bunkers Bunker work continued through July, this time on the bunkers around the 6th green. The sand was removed, drains were cleaned and/or replaced, and fresh sand was added. The front bunker will also be reshaped to include a sand face and gravel layer, like the bunkers on the 11th.

Weather/Rainfall Winter has started well, with 33 mm of rain and an average maximum temperature just over 20 degrees. Fingers crossed the weather plays nicely over the next couple of months so we can get through winter without too many issues.
Greens The greens are performing as expected. They are speeding up and staying nice and firm. There is still a little bit of growth around thanks to the milder temperatures, along with the odd sign of disease, but this has been cleaned up quickly. The greens will be verti-drained with solid tines to help reduce compaction and improve air and water movement through the profile.
Tees The tees are in their usual winter condition. The couch has slowed right down now that the nights are cooler, and soil temperatures have dropped.
We ask all golfers to please take a little extra care to repair and fill divots on the tees.
Fairways The fairways were excellent through June. Turf has been laid on a few more bare patches caused by Ground Pearl, and there are some promising signs on the 17th where turf was laid, with a big drop in Ground Pearl numbers. Biological control has been underway in this area for the past six months. A run of dry weather would be ideal to help keep the fairways in good shape through winter.
Bunkers The sand in the 10th bunkers has been replaced as planned. While this work was being done, the drain was also replaced with fresh gravel and new pipe. The face has been lowered and re-turfed as well.
We ask all golfers to please keep off the new grass as much as possible while it gets established. The 6th bunkers are next, with sand to be removed, drains cleaned out and the face lowered.

coursemanagersupdatearoundthegreensinapril2026

Weather/Rainfall The course is the driest it has been for some time, with just over 14mm of rain recorded in April. We also experienced above-average temperatures of more than 25°C.
Greens The greens have performed extraordinarily well so far this autumn. There is no sign of pest or disease, and green speed is averaging 10 feet. As is typical at this time of year, the greens are firming up and growth is slowing. Slower growth means slower recovery, so please remember to repair pitch marks. Selective herbicide has been applied to the green edges to control kikuyu encroachment. April also saw some light aeration work to improve water and oxygen movement through the soil profile.
Tees The tees held up very well through April, but as we approach the end of the month and cooler nights, growth and recovery will slow. Applications of selective herbicide to control kikuyu encroachment, along with a pre-emergent treatment to control poa annua, were made in April. This will be evident on a few tees as small patches of kikuyu turn yellow and die back. Once again, particularly as growth slows heading into and throughout winter, please take care of the tees by repairing divots. There is a sand bucket on every tee, so please use it to fill your divot.
Fairways The fairways have remained in very good condition through April and into May. Regular fertiliser and pigment applications have helped retain good colour and growth. Some turfing has been carried out on a couple of fairways to cover bare areas. On the 4th fairway, we have cored some couch areas and moved those cores to other bare sections to improve coverage. The benefits of this turfing and coring work will become more visible after winter as we move back into warmer weather. Restoring full coverage is an ongoing process, much like painting the Harbour Bridge, particularly when managing Ground Pearl.
Bunkers The bunkers held up nicely in the dry weather during April. Sand in the new 11th hole bunkers, while at the correct depth, has become a little soft and “fluffy”, with the dry conditions contributing to this. Efforts are being made to ensure the faces are compacted and the sand is kept moist to help prevent balls from plugging in the faces.
A different style of rake has been placed in these bunkers to help golfers rake and smooth this type of sand more effectively.
Other Tree work on the 11th hole took place in May, with a focus on the tree line between the 10th and 11th holes to improve light penetration. This will be followed by work on the trees on and around the 4th tee.
Drain clearing on the 4th hole is scheduled to take place on 18 May, weather permitting.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea!

updateonthemmpproposaltoconvertthecourseintoacemeterymay2026

Dear Members and local residents, I am writing to provide a further update on the ongoing Metropolitan Memorial Parks proposal to convert Carnarvon Golf Course into cemetery / memorial park space. There has still been no announced decision by the NSW Government, and our lease remains in place until 2035. However, there have been several important developments over the past week that I wanted to share with you. Following previous advice from Metropolitan Memorial Parks, we now have confirmation from Minister Kamper’s office that MMP has finalised its collation and analysis of the feedback received during its community consultation process. The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure – Crown Lands has advised that both the report and the timing of its public release remain subject to ongoing Government consideration. While this does not provide the transparency we have been looking for, it does confirm that the MMP consultation report has been completed and is now part of the Government’s decision-making process. As members would be aware, we have continued to call for the full consultation report to be released publicly. It is disappointing, though not completely unexpected, that our GIPA (GIPA is an acronym for the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW). It is the legislation that governs how the public can access information held by government agencies in NSW) applications have been refused, particularly given the scale of community interest and the importance of the proposed decision to the future of the Club, local residents and the broader community. The Department has refused access to documents on the basis that they are considered Cabinet information. We have lodged a review of that decision. We met this week with Chris Rath, Shadow Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, to brief him on the current situation and seek further support from the Opposition. The meeting was both positive and constructive and adds to our ongoing advocacy with Government, Opposition and crossbench representatives, including previous engagement with Minister Steve Kamper, Steph Cooke, Jason Clare, Mark Banasiak, Lynda Voltz, Cumberland City Council and others. We will continue to pursue every reasonable political and community avenue available to ensure Carnarvon’s position is clearly understood and strongly represented. Mr. Rath was receptive to the concerns raised and we discussed the broader issues with the proposal, including the loss of significant recreational open space, the proximity of the site to residential homes, flooding and drainage concerns, the location near major roads, cultural and community sensitivities and the lack of transparency around alternative sites that may have been considered. Several potential next steps were discussed, including placing questions on notice to Government. Mr. Rath also indicated he would be willing to assist in seeking further clarity around the status of the MMP report, if / when it will be released and what other sites have been considered. Carnarvon remains an active, viable and a heavily used community facility. This is not simply a question of golf. It is about preserving 45 hectares of open green space, community recreation, local amenity, health and wellbeing, and the long-term liveability of Lidcombe, Auburn and the surrounding area. We remain extremely grateful for the strong support received from members, local residents, Cumberland City Council, community groups, local representatives and everyone who has continued to advocate for the protection of Carnarvon. Our immediate focus remains:

continuing to push for the public release of the MMP consultation report

pursuing the review of the GIPA decision

working with Chris Rath and other Parliamentary representatives to seek further answers from Government

maintaining engagement with Minister Kamper’s office, Crown Lands and other relevant stakeholders

continuing to work with Cumberland City Council and local representatives

supporting the Pink Army gathering outside Parliament House on Tuesday morning

ensuring the community remains informed and ready to respond if a decision is announced

At this stage, no final Government decision has been announced. However, the matter is clearly progressing through Government consideration and it remains important that we stay engaged, coordinated and visible. Pink Army Gathering – Tuesday 5th of May from 8am outside NSW Parliament House Members and local residents are strongly encouraged to attend the planned Pink Army gathering outside NSW Parliament House on Tuesday morning. This is another important opportunity to show Government that the community remains united, visible and determined to protect Carnarvon Golf Club and the surrounding open green space. If you are able to attend, please wear pink and bring family, friends, neighbours or anyone else who supports preserving Carnarvon as public recreational open space. Thank you again for your continued support. The strength of this community has already made a significant difference, and we will continue to do everything we can to protect the long-term future of Carnarvon Golf Club and this important public open space. Yours faithfully, Adam McGregor General Manager Carnarvon Golf Club
