Course Managers Update - Around the Greens in June 2025

Weather and Rainfall
The weather conditions in May were challenging, with a total rainfall of 211mm, most of which occurred mid-month. The average maximum temperatures reached only 22 degrees, offering little relief. As we look ahead, winter period is expected to be demanding.

Greens
The greens demonstrated excellent performance throughout May and Autumn, maintaining a firm and consistent surface with minimal instances of disease or pest activity. To address the impact of the heavy rainfall, verti-draining was conducted to enhance water and air flow. The average green speed remained consistent at 9’8”, which is a great outcome. Overall, the greens are in strong condition as we approach winter. Monthly solid tining will continue alongside routine soil amendments. Although adverse weather conditions in May delayed the planned application for Kikuyu control, this initiative will resume in June.

Tees
The tees have withstood the adverse weather reasonably well and are progressing toward dormancy. To support their recovery through winter, these tees will be overseeded with a Rye grass blend. The 3rd tee is the most significantly affected and may require some returfing in Spring.

Fairways
The fairways faced considerable challenges due to the 211mm of rainfall. The terrain here was not originally designed to facilitate drainage suitable for fine-cut sports turf, resulting in water accumulation and secondary damage from carts and mowers during May. The affected areas have been treated with the "Aerovator" to break up the surface, promoting improved drainage and airflow. While the healthier sections of the fairways remain in good condition, they have slightly thinned due to high moisture levels and reduced sunlight. Nevertheless, I am confident that these areas will recover fully.

Bunkers
The bunkers recovered well after April’s rainfall; however, the substantial downpour in May presented additional challenges. Once the course reopened, most bunkers were restored to playable conditions, although the usual trouble spots required extra time to drain. Regular maintenance tasks, including trimming and edging of bunker faces, were also carried out.
